Found lamb shanks for the first time so quite excited. A little bit of a road trip but worth it. I just wondered, as I’ve not cooked lamb shanks before, if it was normal for them to weigh just over 1lb each? I only bought two to try them out this weekend in a curry. They had quite a big selection in Whole Foods as I can’t find much locally to me in the USA. Thank you

Thank you @Damian Green for the tip. I’m going to try Hari’s lamb shank curry tomorrow as left it a bit late today. That would be great for the other recipe thanks.👌

Whatever recipe you use @traceyross I’d highly recommend you sear these off in the masala to get some colour on them before cooking low and slow. I’ve got a really good recipe to share with you after you’ve done the Hari lamb shank curry (which I’m guessing you’re doing first) Lamb Shank are just awesome prob my fav xxx

Hi @joncrewgee no it’s not unfortunately where I am in the USA so it’s exciting when I find a shop that sells lamb. I would say steak, chicken or beef burgers are very popular here for eating out or at home. Mexican food and Italian food rank pretty high too.

Hi @stripeybag yes we do the cuts for pork and beef are named slightly different from UK on the animal. I’ve always been confused buying beef to roast. This is the first time I’ve found a big lamb selection.

That’s exciting @traceyross there is nothing like a low and slow lamb shank! Yes weight wise that’s about right too thanks @Jo dunn looking forward to pictures!!

Yes @Jo dunn it’s the Hyderabadi shanks recipe. I could not remember the name but had a picture in my head of what it looked like and found it online. That’s great to know you’ve tried this one. 👌

Thanks @Jo dunn yeah it’s good finding these places! You are lucky having lots of butchers, so miss that. It’s always fun stocking up at the Indian grocery store there are always new things to try (and the biscuits are fab too).💞

Yes, good old Waitrose! I used to have two really near me. Now it's a huge trek to Newcastle! Glad you've found a good butcher! Treasure him! We have so many beautiful butchers all around us in the north east, so I can't complain about no Waitrose, can I? When I found a good Indian grocery 30mins drive away in Middlesbrough, I was elated😀😎😀, so I know how you must be feeling about finding a good butchers! Enjoy your shanks, delish! @traceyross 💕

Thank you @Jo dunn for your reply and advice that’s great. I was a little unsure what was normal weight (or were they abnormally huge here!) they were 957g for two so I’ll know for next time that it’s normal. So delighted to finally find a butcher counter that sells lamb as it’s not popular here compared to beef. I’m not sure what I’m planning yet. I’ll check out Hari’s slow cooker book and ebook but good to know about the Hyderbadi recipe. I do miss Waitrose! 💞

Waitrose are selling two in a pack weighing 800 grams, if that helps @traceyross x

Wow Tracey! Your butcher's meat display looks good. Yes, lamb shanks, one per person, would weigh around 500g each, there's a lot of weight in the bone, but that's where the flavour is going to come from!! You'll LOVE Hari's Hyderbadi recipe, if that's what you're planning, in the slow cooker, .... ooh...just amazing flavours! @traceyross 💕
